Different Selection Procedures of Universal Worm Gear Drives

Abstract: Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to point out the usual methods of determining the service factor, which is the most influential parameter. In order to provide the proper selection of the size of the worm gear reducer, manufacturers are trying to take detailed look at all the factors which influence the work gear and to provide customers with the best possible solution. The greatest impact on their defining has a safety factor which is used to calculate the gear unit and the effect of an ambient temperatu… Show more

“…In addition to increasing the bearing capacity, they also try to increase the highest values of gear ratios, by the same such interventions, and above all by reducing the number of teeth of the first gear (usually to 8) in order to enable the offer of lower (cheaper) gears. Today, single-stage gear reducers are made with gear ratios of up to 15, two-stage and over 80, and three-stage and over 300 [2]. These values, compared to thirty years ago, are three times higher, which indicates the intensive development of these gear reduces.…”

“…Changing of gear ratio causes the changing of speed of shaft and bearings. In such a way, it consequently changes the operating life of the bearings [6,7]. Since optimal operating life of the bearing is usually adopted as 10,000 hours (five years of operating, with fifty working weeks in a year and forty working hours per a week), the bearing should be calculated in that way to provide expected lifetime for all, or at most, gear ratio values [1][2][3].…”

“…These interventions of leading gear reducer manufacturers improved their position at the market, but very soon smaller manufacturers have done the same thing. However, there is some reduction of competition at the market since small manufacturers were not be able to financially follow the interventions of major manufacturers, mainly due to the high cost of producing special casting tools [11,12].…”
