Dietary patterns among children aged 6–7 y in four Spanish cities with widely differing cardiovascular mortality

Abstract: Objective: Classic cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking, arterial hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia, cannot explain a substantial part of the geographic differences in cardiovascular mortality. Anthropometric and nutritional factors in early stages of life may contribute to adult cardiovascular disease. Therefore, this work examines certain anthropometric variables and diet among children aged 6 -7 y, living in four Spanish cities with widely differing ischaemic heart disease (IHD) mortality. “…However, in Portuguese 7-9 years old, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher than in this sample, at 20 and 11%, respectively (Padez et al, 2004). In Spanish 6-7 years old, the prevalence of obesity ranged from 8.5% in Madrid to as high as 15.7% in Cadiz (Rodriguez-Artalejo et al, 2002). When using the UK90 definition, in a sample of 4-7 year old children from rural Ireland, the prevalence of overweight was nearly double than that of the present study with 23% of boys and 18% of girls overweight (McMaster (Kuczmarski et al, 2000).…”

“…In a German study, which used a 7-day-checklist protocols to study food consumption in primary school children, the mean daily consumption of vegetables and fruit was approximately 240 g (Koletzko et al, 2000). Spanish children aged 6-7 years consumed about 650 g fruits and vegetables daily (Rodriguez-Artalejo et al, 2002), which is a great amount compared with the result of other studies. In that study, the dietary information was obtained using a food-frequency questionnaire.…”

“…Measures of high-glycemic-index carbohydrates and proportions of dietary saturated and trans fats also were not collected as a part of this study, although the intervention was designed to foster vegetables, fruit, and complex carbohydrate choices to lower dietary fat. Lower dietary fat intake has been correlated with lower serum lipids ( Nicklas et al, 2002) and reduced obesity among children (Rodriguez-Artalejo et al, 2002). Continued study and intervention is especially important because the dietary fat intake of children increases, especially as children grow older (Zive, Berry, Sallis, Frank, & Nader, 2002).…”
