Abstract: The effect of different dietary oil sources on the innate immunity and resistance of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, to Streptococcus agalactiae infection were evaluated. Fish were fed with diets containing different lipid sources (soybean oil [SO], corn oil, linseed oil [LO], fish oil [FO], and olive oil [OO]). Fish fed SO presented the highest (P < 0.05) hematocrit and serum protein. LO and FO diets increased (P < 0.05) the erythrocyte resistance to osmotic lysis in comparison with other treatments. Fis… Show more

“…Compared to the FO and OO groups, the SO group in muscle had the lowest n‐3/n‐6 ratio, which was attributed to the highest level of total n‐6 PUFA. This result is consistent with many previous studies (Ferreiraet al, ; Ng et al, ). Consequently, some nutritionists have questioned the nutritional value of tilapia in the human diet (Karapanagiotidis et al, ; Ivester et al, ).…”

“…Additionally, it appeared that DHA might tend to be preferentially deposited (Senadheera, Turchini, Thanuthong, & Francis, 2010). A similar phenomenon also occurred in other studies (Ferreira et al, 2011(Ferreira et al, , 2015Senadheera et al, 2011). Our findings also found that 18:1n-9 represented the most abundant FA in liver, irrespective of dietary lipid treatments.…”

“…Results from this present study were not affected by dietary lipids irrespective of sources. This agrees with previous studies where fish was fed different diets of linoleic and linolenic acid (Li et al, ) and also when fish received diets of different lipids (Ferreira et al, ). It is suggested that the regulation and synthesis of complement pathways need to be investigated to ascertain its mechanisms of operation (Ferreira et al, ).…”

“…Other protein sources evaluated have included tuna byproduct meal in juvenile abalone, Haliotis discus (Jung et al ); grain distiller's dried yeast in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Sealey et al ), and in juvenile Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Achupallas et al ); glandless cottonseed protein in Pacific white shrimp (Siccardi et al ); and cricket meal in African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Taufek et al ). Various dietary oil sources were evaluated for blunt snout bream, Megalobrama amblycephala (Li et al ), and palm oil in Chu's croaker, Nibea coibor (Huang et al ), and for effects on immunity and resistance to Streptococcus agalactiae (Ferreira et al ).…”
