Abstract: most of the authors agree that there was a "struggle for cultural autonomy" in the German Democratic Republic. (This was the focus of the Bath conference.) That the struggle may not have succeeded-and the evidence which accumulates from the Slasi files suggests this conclusion-does not mean the effort is undeserving of scholarly examination.
