Dicrocoelium hospes Looss, 1907 (Digenea, Dicrocoeliidae): spermiogenesis, mature spermatozoon and ultrastructural comparative study

Abstract: This work describes the first ultrastructural results on spermiogenesis and on the mature spermatozoon of Dicrocoelium hospes (Trematoda, Digenea) collected in Bos indicus from Senegal (Africa). Examination of this species was processed by TEM. Spermiogenesis follows the general pattern found in the digenean, but reveals a particularity consisting of the appearance of glycogen granules in the late spermatids within the testes. The mature spermatozoon possesses five distinct regions and presents all features fo… Show more

“…Such a rotation, nevertheless, is relatively frequent in digeneans, in particular in species from the Fasciolidae, Dicrocoeliidae, Monorchiidae, Opecoelidae and Allocreadiidae (Ndiaye et al 2003a;Levron et al 2003Levron et al , 2004Agostini et al 2005;Quilichini et al 2007a, b). As indicated above, rotation is concluded to be present in G. catostomi and may be similar to that of K. armeniaca (Table I).…”

“…This is also the case for T. taeniaeformis. Taking into account the recent observations of flagellar rotations of up to 120°in the Fasciolidae, Dicrocoeliidae, Monorchiidae, Opecoelidae and Allocreadiidae digeneans (Ndiaye et al 2003c;Levron et al 2003Levron et al , 2004Agostini et al 2005;Quilichini et al 2007a, b), and described in the caryophyllidean Wenyonia virilis and in the spathebothriidean C. truncatus (Bruňanská et al 2006, Miquel et al 2008), it appears that there may be a gradual reduction of the rotation angle until there is no rotation, a state that is considered the apomorphic condition of this character (Justine 1998(Justine , 2001.…”

“…Other digeneans exhibit two mitochondria, one being located at the level of the ornamented region and the other in the area containing the nucleus. This is the case of the opecoelids P. furcatum, N. wisniewskii, N. testiobliquum (Levron et al 2004b;Quilichini et al 2007a, c), the dicrocoeliid D. hospes (Agostini et al 2005), the troglotrematid T. acutum (Miquel et al 2006), the apocreadiid N. chabaudi (Kacem et al 2010) or the omphalometrid R. exasperatum (Bakhoum et al 2011b). Additionally, a spermatozoon with three mitochondria has recently been described in B. ectorchus, S. sudanensis, A. capitellatum and E. squamula (Ashour et al 2007, Bakhoum et al 2009, Ternengo et al 2009).…”

“…However, some recent studies have described flagellar rotations greater than 90°. It is the case of Helicometra fasciata, Monorchis parvus, Fasciola hepatica, Dicrocoelium hospes, Nicolla wisniewskii or Crepidostomum metoecus (Ndiaye et al 2003;Levron et al 2003Levron et al , 2004aAgostini et al 2005;Quilichini et al 2007a, b).…”
