Abstract: Purpose. Several meta-analyses have reported data about the diagnostic performance of positron emission tomography or positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET or PET/CT) with different radiotracers in patients with suspicious lung cancer (LC) or pleural tumours (PT). This review article aims at providing an overview on the recent evidence-based data in this setting. Methods. A comprehensive literature search of meta-analyses published in PubMed/MEDLINE and Cochrane Library database from January 20… Show more

“…Therefore, the 18 F-FDG PET CT may be useful in selecting possible biopsy sites (in priority, sites with the most important 18-FDG uptake), but not in distinguishing between both entities. 18F-3 -Fluoro-3 -deoxythymidine PET CT can help to distinguish malignant from non-malignant lesions but its role in cancer is to be determined [227]. If uncertainty remains, multiple biopsies and repeated tissue sampling may be necessary to evidence malignant cells.…”

“…When facing suspicion of neurosarcoidosis, PET CT can be useful to determine either CNS inflammation and/or extra neurologic biopsy sites with active sarcoidosis features [ 214 ]. Moreover, combination of F18 fluorothymidine and F18-FDG PET CT can be useful to distinguish neoplastic disorders from sarcoidosis [ 215 ].…”

“…lung nodules due to malignancy vs TB or other benign inflammatory conditions. [49][50][51] Other scenarios in which studies have evaluated the diagnostic ability of FDG PET/CT for TB and its differentiation from related conditions include PTB vs bacterial infections, 52 tuberculous vs non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease, 53 pleural TB vs mesothelioma, 54 peritoneal TB vs peritoneal carcinomatosis, 55,56 and TB spondylodiscitis vs pyogenic spondylodiscitis. 57 Dual-time-point imaging has also been explored in differentiating pyogenic from TB spondylodiscitis.…”
