Abstract: Introduction: Hantavirus pulmonary and cardiovascular syndrome (HPCS) is an emerging serious disease in the Americas. Hantaviruses (Bunyaviridae) are the causative agents of this syndrome and are mainly transmitted through inhalation of aerosols containing the excreta of wild rodents. and Akodon sp (1.5%). Nucleotide sequences obtained through RT-PCR from one HPCS patient and one Calomys tener rodent were compared with hantavirus sequences from GenBank, which showed that both were homologous with ARAV. Conclus… Show more

“…This fatality ratio is lower than others reported in previous studies in the region of Ribeirão Preto, which was approximately 50% (Campos et al 2009, Figueiredo et al 2009bFigueiredo et al 2010. ARAV, the causative of HCPS in the region of Ribeirão Preto is, probably, the most virulent among all Brazilian hantaviruses (Figueiredo et al 2009b).…”

“…The levels of IgG are detectable throughout the life of the individual, allowing studies about the prevalence of HPS [36]. Diagnosis can also be done by PCR techniques, already performed in research centers in Brazil, but routine use of this technique is limited due to its costs [37,38].…”

“…Between 1993-2010, more than 1,300 cases of HPCS have been reported in all the Brazilian regions, distributed throughout 14 states (MS/ SVS/DVE 2010). Five hantaviruses have been reported to cause hantavirus pulmonary and cardiovascular syndrome (HPCS) in Brazilian patients: Anajatuba, Araraquara, Castelo dos Sonhos, Juquitiba and Laguna Negra-like (Figueiredo et al 2010). Hantavirus infection in Brazil is predominantly related to agricultural activity and a common manner of contracting this infection, especially in remote small towns, is through the cleaning of rural grain storage buildings.…”

“…Alternatively, it is possible that the animals, after a long period of infection, could maintain a low viral load, not allowing detection of the agent by RT-PCR (Moreli et al 2004;Schönrich et al 2008;Easterbrook et al 2008). The phylogenetic analysis showed that the Hantavirus infecting one of the captured N. lasiurus was the ARAV, which is the most common cause of HCPS in the Ribeirão Preto region Figueiredo et al 2010). This is worrying, because this Hantavirus, based on case-fatality ratio, is probably the most virulent among all Hantaviruses worldwide ).…”

“…In the southeast and central plateau of Brazil, the Juquitiba virus is associated with the Oligoryzomys nigripes rodent and the Araraquara virus with Necromys lasiurus (Suzuki et al 2004;Figueiredo et al 2009). N. lasiurus lives in the Cerrado areas of the central plateau and southeastern Brazil, which includes the city of Ribeirão Preto Figueiredo et al 2010).…”
