Devonian Vertebrates From Colombia

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Vertebrate remains are reported from the Emsian±Eifelian Floresta Formation and the Late Devonian (?Frasnian) Cuche Formation of north-eastern Colombia. The material from the Floresta Formation is associated with a marine invertebrate fauna and includes an arthrodire and probably a rhenanid. Several vertebrate-bearing localities are recorded from the Cuche Formation; vertebrates occur with plant remains and lingulid fragments. They include an acanthodian (Cheiracanthoides? sp.), a chondrichthyan (Ant… Show more

“…1), is a key area for the study of the Colombian Devonian fauna and flora of Colombia. Abundant and diverse plants, invertebrates and vertebrates have been described (e.g., Caster 1939, Berry et al 2000, Janvier & Villarroel 2000. However, although fossils are abundant and widely distributed in the succession, their preservation is often poor, except in some localities.…”

“…1) as can be expected from marine fishes. Asterolepis has its widest distribution around the Middle/Late Devonian boundary, as shown by Young (1981Young ( , 1993 and Janvier & Villarroel (2000). The distribution of Asterolepis coincides with the occurrences of the widely distributed antiarch Bothriolepis, for which Young (2003) suggested a dispersal through the sea.…”

“…Disarticulated chondrichthyan, acanthodians, osteichthyans and placoderm fossils have for decades been reported from Devonian rocks in Bolivia, Colombia, venezuela and the Falkland Islands (Blieck et al 1996, Gagnier et al 1988, Janvier and Suárez-Riglos 1986, Janvier and Villarroel 2000, Santos 1961, young et al 2000, Maisey et al 2002. older fish faunas have been recorded in Argentina (Albanesi et al 1995).…”
