Development of theory‐based knowledge translation interventions to facilitate the implementation of evidence‐based guidelines on the early management of adults with traumatic spinal cord injury

Abstract: This research project allowed us developing KT interventions according to a thorough behavioural change methodology. Exposure to the generated interventions will support health care professionals in providing the best care to SCI patients.

“…Although a relatively new model, the COM‐B model has been successfully applied as a framework to the English Department of Health tobacco control strategy (Health, ), the NICE guidance on reducing obesity (NICE, ), medication adherence and management (Jackson et al ; Sinnott et al ), management of spinal cord injury (Bérubé et al ), childhood obesity (Curtis et al ; Robinson et al ), and promotion of safe‐sex practices (Newby et al ). It has also recently been adopted by Improving Access to Psychological Therapy teams to guide the application of low‐intensity lifestyle interventions for psychological well‐being practitioners and other health professionals.…”

“…24,25 The most common form of TSI in adults is vertebral fracture, which occurs most commonly in the cervical re-gion. 26,27 We show that while patients with TSI commonly present with cervical fractures, they also present with thoracic and lumbar fractures at similar rates. Understanding the mechanics that produce these injuries after impact can inform the type of protective gear needed for athletes participating in different sports.…”

“…Choosing the most appropriate theory-driven approach is challenging as such models can be complex, that is, difficult for both researchers and health care practitioners to understand and operationalize, or lack comprehensiveness [64]. Although the TDF and BCW are comparatively new implementation frameworks, they have already been used in several studies to understand and promote the uptake of evidence in clinical practice [65][66][67], including in the field of physiotherapy [68]. For this research project, we decided to use the TDF as it has proven to be a comprehensive and accessible way to understand the barriers and facilitators to best practice in primary and secondary care in Western countries [64].…”
