“…The development of the digestive tract and associated organs has been well documented for a number of marine and freshwater species (Verreth et al 1992;Segner et al 1994;Peña et al 2003;Gisbert et al 2004;Mai et al 2005;Chen et al 2006;García-Gasca et al 2006;Rønnestad and Morais 2008;ZamboninoInfante et al 2008;Galaviz et al 2011). However, only few studies combine molecular and biochemical procedures to describe the relationship between the transcription of a digestive enzyme and its corresponding enzymatic activity, as reported for spotted sand bass Paralabrax maculatofasciatus (Á lvarez- González et al 2008González et al , 2010, winter flounder Pleuronectus americanus (Douglas et al 1999;Murray et al 2004Murray et al , 2006, bullseye puffer Sphoeroides annulatus (García-Gasca et al 2006), Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (Rungruangsak-Torrissen et al 2006), turbot Scophthalmus maximus (Chi et al 2013) and Asian seabass Lates calcarifer (Srichanun et al 2013). Studies integrating the development of the digestive system with expression or activation of digestive enzymes during development of larvae are scarce (Péres et al 1998;Cahu et al 2004;García-Gasca et al 2006;Gisbert et al 2009;Galaviz et al 2011Galaviz et al , 2012.…”

“…Este porcentaje de supervivencia es superior al reportado hasta entonces (Álvarez Lajonchere et al 2008, Abdo-de la Parra et al 2010. García-Gasca et al (2006) examinaron el desarrollo del tracto digestivo para evaluar la capacidad digestiva de larvas de botete diana desde la eclosión hasta 32 DDE. El desarrollo del tracto digestivo se analizó por histología y la actividad de la tripsina, mediante histoquímica.…”

“…The digestive tract development and capacity for digestion of food in S. annulatus from fertilized egg to 32 DPH were studied by histological, histochemical and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction methods (García-Gasca et al 2006 species from the Tetraodontidae family (Kumai et al 1989). As for the activity of digestive enzymes during larval development in the bullseye puffer, it was found that trypsin activity, one of the main digestive enzymes during the larval phase of marine fish, starts at 2 DHP reaching a peak from 16 to 24 DPH, which corresponds to the Artemia feeding period (García-Gasca et al 2006). The gene expression of trypsinogen was first detected in 24-h fertilized eggs, then showing a significant increase at 75 h post-fertilization and at 4 DPH when the fish larvae starts exogenous feeding.…”

“…High protein requirements are typical for a carnivorous fish. However, S. annulatus and other puffer fish species do not have a stomach during their life cycle (Kumai et al 1989;García-Gasca et al 2006). Thus, it remains to be elucidated how dietary protein digestion in this stomachless fish is carried out.…”
