Development of Probabilistic Viscoelastic Continuum Damage Model for Asphalt Concrete

Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to develop a realistic probabilistic framework for characterization of different types of asphalt concrete using advanced material modeling. The adopted methodology builds on and enhances a viscoelastic continuum damage (VECD) material model by utilizing a suite of associated experimental testing protocols and incorporating the uncertainties associated with the different material properties. The modeled uncertainties address the variabilities and errors associated with the l… Show more

“…The framework developed by Liu [ 29 ] based on spectral methods ensures that the master curves of all viscoelastic variables complied with the LVE theory. Moreover, the relaxation and retardation spectrum are the most important parameters for the construction of viscoelastic continuous damage models (VECD) [ 30 , 31 , 32 ] and their probabilistic models [ 33 , 34 ].…”

“…Theoretical models can also be used to analyze damage characteristics. Kassem et al (2019) developed a linear viscoelastic function model of an asphalt mixture based on the viscoelastic continuous damage model using complex modulus tests to characterize its damage characteristics. Zhang et al (2019) combined the fatigue damage theory with viscoelastic mechanics to establish a viscoelastic damage constitutive model of an asphalt mixture under cyclic loading using the Burgers viscoelastic and modified Chaboche damage models.…”

“…Hence, Yang and Manning's stochastic fatigue crack growth model related to the stress intensity factor is limited. A probabilistic viscoelastic continuum damage model was employed to analyze the variability of asphalt materials [27], [28], [29]. Nevertheless, only the probability distribution curve of fatigue life was analyzed, and stochastic damage analysis for the entire fatigue damage process was not implemented and tracked.…”
