We have synthesized undoped and rare-earth (RE)-doped 12CaO·7Al 2 O 3 (RE:C12A7) crystals by the floating zone (FZ) method to systematically study the effects of RE doping (doped with all the lanthanoid elements except for Sc, Y, La, Pm, and Lu) in C12A7 for radiation detector applications. In both photoluminescence (PL) and scintillation, the undoped C12A7 crystal showed a weak emission due to the lattice defects appearing at around 500 nm, and the decay time was on the order of several nanoseconds. On the other hand, the RE:C12A7 crystals showed PL and scintillation owing to the 4f-4f transitions of RE 3+ ions appearing from the UV to NIR ranges depending on the RE element. The decay times of these emissions ranged from a few microseconds to milliseconds depending on the RE element and the values were typical for the electronic transitions of trivalent rare earths.

Optical, scintillation, and dosimeter properties of AlN ceramic were reported. AlN sample was SHAPAL, a commercial product of Tokuyama Corp. for mainly a heat sink application. From ultra violet to near infrared wavelengths, it showed 0.021% transmittance with visibly translucent appearance. In photoluminescence (PL), it exhibited mainly two emission bands around 340 and 550 nm with primary decay times of 0.92 and 0.24 ns, respectively. X-ray induced radioluminescence spectrum was investigated and 340 nm peak showed high emission intensity. As a dosimeter property, thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) was studied and glow peaks appeared at 80 and 320°C. The linearity between the irradiated dose and TSL intensity was studied and AlN ceramic exhibited a good linear response from 0.002 to 0.1 Gy.

Lu 3 Al 5 O 12 (LuAG) single crystals co-doped with Nd and Ce were grown by the Floating Zone (FZ) method to evaluate their scintillation properties particularly in the near infrared (NIR) wavelength. When X-ray was irradiated, the scintillation due to Nd 3+4 F 3/2 ¼ 4 I 11/2 transition was observed at 1064 nm. By changing the irradiation dose from 101000 mGy, we evaluated the relation between the scintillation intensity and the X-ray dose, and the relation was approximately linear. The scintillation decay time profiles were approximated by two or three exponential decay functions. The observed decay times were 100 ns due to Ce 3+ , 0.61.0¯s due to the garnet host and few¯s due to Nd 3+ .
