Abstract:  Various percentages of minimal-size ZnO and ZnO-GO for PSF membrane enhancement.  5 times reduction of ZnO usage with the introduction of GO nanosheets as support.  ZnO-GO composite is more hydrophilic compared to other GO-nanohybrid.  ZnO-GO membrane exhibits excellent antifouling and antibacterial properties.

“…A significant agglomeration was also noticed with the increase in the CMS loading. Such agglomeration behavior of inorganic fillers has been reported previously (Abdullah et al, 2016; Ahmad et al, 2015; Chung et al, 2017). It is conferred that weak van der Waals forces cause the nano‐sized filler to stick together and create agglomeration during the phase inversion.…”

“…Among a wide range of particles, zinc oxide nanoparticles have demonstrated enhanced antibacterial and antifouling properties [35,36]. Incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles into a polymer matrix such as that of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) [37], polysulfide (PSF) [38] and polyethersulfone (PES) [39] enhanced the antifouling activity of these polymer matrices when used as ultrafiltration membranes. Chitosan-ZnO nanocomposites have demonstrated an effective marine antifouling activity against Pseudoalteromonas nigrifaciens bacteria and the diatom Navicula sp.…”

“…As reported in previous literature, there are two important factors affecting membrane antifouling behaviors, that is, the membrane surface hydrophilicity and roughness. It is difficult for foulants to absorb on a more hydrophilic and smoother membrane surface.…”
