Development of Operating Speed Models for Different Vehicle Classes on Rural Two-Lane Highways

Abstract: The aim of this study was to develop operating speed models for different vehicle classes for rural two-lane highways. Ten horizontal curves, connected with relatively long tangents, with various geometric characteristics, were selected to perfom this study. A series of traffic surveys were carried out using automatic traffic counters, to collect sufficient speed data for different vehicle classes. Preliminary analysis confimed the necessity of the classification of the vehicles in order to develop operating s… Show more

“…A decrease in PCI will result in a lower speed. In a study [17], vehicle speed was examined on both distressed and nondistressed road sections. The road pavement condition was determined via visual observations and traffic data were collected at selected sites.…”

“…To evaluate the overall performance of various treatments, data from the LTPP SPS-3 program on fatigue cracking, longitudinal cracking, rutting, and roughness were used. The results of paired t-test for fatigue cracking were shown in Table (4). Thin overlay and chip seal had pvalues less than 0.05, indicating that their improving effectiveness on fatigue cracking was significant.…”

“…Such distresses can lead to a variety of difficulties, particularly in developing countries such as Egypt. Pavement surface conditions have an influence on traffic safety, operating speed, maneuverability, driver comfort, and service volume [4]. To overcome the distresses associated with materials, traffic, and environmental conditions, years of maintenance and rehabilitation are required [5].…”
