Development of an integrated Sasang constitution diagnosis method using face, body shape, voice, and questionnaire information

Abstract: BackgroundSasang constitutional medicine (SCM) is a unique form of traditional Korean medicine that divides human beings into four constitutional types (Tae-Yang: TY, Tae-Eum: TE, So-Yang: SY, and So-Eum: SE), which differ in inherited characteristics, such as external appearance, personality traits, susceptibility to particular diseases, drug responses, and equilibrium among internal organ functions. According to SCM, herbs that belong to a certain constitution cannot be used in patients with other constituti… Show more

“…1 Studies have sought to identify distinct characteristics of the four constitutions as a means of best individualizing the treatment approach. [2][3][4][5][6] Generally, the personality traits of the TY type include a creative, positive, progressive temperament, and the type is characterized by hyperactive lung and hypoactive liver functions. The SY type personality is unstable, easily bored, and restrained; this type is more vulnerable to urinary diseases due to hypoactive kidney function.…”

“…The subjects (n = 5,229 in KoGES and n = 2,088 in KDC) were analyzed using an integrated diagnostic model consisting of face, body shape, voice, and questionnaire information, i.e., the Sasang Constitutional Analysis Tool (SCAT), in order to provide a basis for discriminating the constitutional types based on the probability values for each Sasang constitutional type [19]. The 63 KoGES and 479 KDC subjects were excluded after the SCAT analysis, due to missing data in the four components of the SCAT or low-quality data for facial pictures and vocal records [19].…”
