Development of a Smart Signalization for Emergency Vehicles

Abstract: As the population increases, the number of motorized vehicles on the roads also increases. As the number of vehicles increases, traffic congestion occurs. Traffic lights are used at road junctions, intersections, pedestrian crossings, and other places where traffic needs to be controlled to avoid traffic chaos. Due to traffic lights installed in the city, queues of vehicles are formed on the streets for most of the day, and many problems arise because of this. One of the most important problems is that emergen… Show more

“…As a result, scaling these solutions could pose significant challenges. Siddiqi et al [20] proposed a system in which the communication between ambulances and traffic lights is provided through a mobile application developed by them and operated by ambulances teams. This application controls the traffic lights via SMS.…”

“…However, limitations include the lack of experimental validation, consideration of security issues, and comparison with alternative solutions. In this paper [4] presents a system allowing emergency vehicles to control traffic lights via SMS technology and a mobile application. It utilizes GSM/GPRS/GPS modules, Arduino Uno boards, and relay boards for communication and control.…”

“…Based on the report published by the World Council on City Data (WCCD) in 2017, GHG emissions were reduced by 63% in the city of Los Angeles due to switching to light emitting diode (LED) lighting [14]. By 2025, the global call of switching lighting systems to 100% smart LED lighting will contribute to the reduction of the lighting share of the global energy consumption from 15% to 8% [75,76].…”

“…EVP systems are used to provide emergency vehicles, such as ambulances and fire trucks, with high priority access to intersections. These systems use transmitters on emergency vehicles to communicate with traffic signals [76], allowing them to change to green lights and clear the way for the emergency vehicle.…”
