Development and perspectives of biomedical engineering in South East European countries

Abstract: In respect with growing population, chronical disease management and aging population, the medicine and health care have drastically changed over the past decades. Engineering became more involved in medicine resulting in development of new discipline, Biomedical Engineering. As new engineering solution for problems in medicine regarding therapy, diagnosis and treatment have emerged, the need for new interdisciplinary educational curriculums evolved. Today, South East Countries are focused on developing new ed… Show more

“…Conversely, the students’ competency is measured with simple surveys and interviews. Finally, in [ 33 ], the authors discussed the improvement of medical content of the BME curriculum by following the models in high standard international schools. The improvement is mainly carried out by adding appropriate elective courses.…”

“…As will be detailed later in the discussion section, improvement of medical content in BME curriculum based on qualitative assessment processes, comparison with high-standard programs or implicit inter-relation between the medical content and the BME expected technical outcomes has been approached by a number of studies [ 3 , 4 , 13 , 19 33 ]. However, the major limitations of the previous research are the high dependence on surveys or pure qualitative approaches as well as the absence of strong focus on medical outcomes without implicit confusion with the technical ones.…”

“…In particular, physical therapy robots have a long history. Rudimentary prosthetics and sensors might have been used since the times of Ancient Egypt [33]; more recently, exoskeletons were designed as tools to help people walk in the 1800s, and to carry heavy loads since the 1960s [34]. Such robots have also begun to be used more recently in other roles, such as "socially assistive" robots working as exercise coaches, to get elderly to move their arms [35].…”

“…(International System of Units) quantities they can become part of legal metrology framework and can be adapted and used more or less straight forward. This is the case in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) where 10 groups of medical devices with measuring function have been introduced into legal metrology framework [2,3] which was a major step forward in developing the area of clinical engineering in this country [4]. This paper presents achievements and activities of Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina (IMBIH), the competent state authority for metrology in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the area of legal metrology for the particular group of medical devices with measuring function.…”
