Developing Employment Environments Where Individuals with ASD Thrive: Using Machine Learning to Explore Employer Policies and Practices

Abstract: An online survey instrument was developed to assess employers’ perspectives on hiring job candidates with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The investigators used K-means clustering to categorize companies in clusters based on their hiring practices related to individuals with ASD. This methodology allowed the investigators to assess and compare the various factors of businesses that successfully hire employees with ASD versus those that do not. The cluster analysis indicated that company structures, policies an… Show more

“…Further implementing support systems in the working environment, by for example appointing a designated supervisor or peer mentor, has been identified as an important strategy to support employees with ASD to manage their workplace concerns and maximize their potential (Dreaver et al, 2020 ; Nicholas et al, 2018 ). “…Griffiths et al used machine learning to study the employment environment of people with autism and developed an online survey tool to assess employers' views on hiring job seekers with autism spectrum disorders. Cluster analysis shows that company structure, policies and practices, ideas, and employers' and employees' needs are crucial to determining who will successfully hire job seekers [10]. To sum up, there are some research gaps in previous studies, and insufficient attention is paid to the evaluation results of college students' innovation and entrepreneurship evaluation index system.…”

“…Researchers used a descriptive qualitative case study design that allowed for exploration of events or phenomena in a real-world context and from multiple sources, with the purpose of looking into the unique experience of the people's lives and interactions with their work environment in relation to their disability inclusion efforts (Creswell & Poth, 2018;Yin, 2018). The use of a case study design to investigate perceptions of the how and why for a businessled autism employment initiative is fitting given the limited literature capturing the continuum of people on the autism spectrum and the range of industries where they could be employed (Griffiths et al, 2020). The research team involved in data collection and analysis was comprised of six faculty and doctoral students across three universities in the United States.…”
