ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to assess the quality of counselling provided for acute diarrhoea and to evaluate the role of the patient's approach and different user groups in determining the outcome of counselling.MethodsThe simulated patient methodology was used in all 21 community pharmacies in a north‐eastern German city. Four different scenarios related to self‐medication of acute diarrhoea were developed and used in all the pharmacies (a total of 84 visits). The assessment form, completed immediately postvisit by the simulated patient, included 9 objective items scored using dichotomous scales to produce a scale from 0 to 9. After evaluating the data, every pharmacy received individual performance feedback to encourage behavioural changes and improve the quality of the counselling provided.Key findingsOverall, the quality of counselling was poor (mean score of 3.3/9 (37%)). The most common information provided was about dosage (87% of interactions), while the least common information given was about side effects (4% of interactions). The main effect was seen when comparing the product and symptom requests (F(1,60) = 24.748, P < 0.001, ωp 2 = 0.277). There was no effect resulting from different user groups (F(1,28) = 0.237, P = 0.630, ωp 2 = −0.026) and no interaction between the type of request and different user groups (F(1,28) = 3.395, P = 0.076, ωp 2 = 0.073).ConclusionsThis study highlighted the current deficits in appropriate counselling provided by community pharmacies in Germany.

The role of the pharmacist as a "communicator" of information and advice between patients, other healthcare practitioners, and the community is recognized as a vital component of the responsibilities of a practicing pharmacist. Pharmacy education is changing to reflect this, although the difficulty is in designing a curriculum that is capable of equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills, using activities that are effective in promoting communication competency. The objective of this review was to identify published, peer-reviewed articles concerning communication training in pharmacy education programs, and describe which communication skills the structured learning activities aimed to improve and how these learning activities were assessed. A systematic literature search was conducted and the articles found were analyzed and divided into categories based on specific communication skills taught and type of learning activity used. Oral interpersonal communication skills targeted at patients were the most common skill-type described, followed by clinical writing skills. Common teaching methods included simulated and standardized patient interactions and pharmacy practice experience courses. Most educational interventions were assessed by subjective measures. Many interventions were described as fragments, in isolation of other learning activities that took place in a course, which impedes complete analysis of study results. To succeed in communication training, integration between different learning activities and progression within pharmacy educations are important.

Zaman içindeki de i imi gösteren sonuçlar, standardize hastalar ve simülasyon tekniklerinin etkin kullan m n n program daha etkili k ld n dü ündürmektedir.Anahtar Sözcükler: Ayd nlat lm onam, beceri e itimi, standardize hasta, simülasyon teknikleri, ileti im becerileri Aim: Applied education program on "Obtaining Informed Consent Skill (UAOAB)", which was developed for Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Grade-3 students and has been continuing since 2004, underwent some structural changes over the years especially after 2012. This study was designed to reveal whether students' thoughts on the program differ parallel to these changes through time.Material and Method: Students who attended practice sessions as a part of the UAOAB education between the years of 2010-14 were asked to fill out an evaluation questionnaire about this education study. The data collected were statistically analyzed and findings were interpreted.Findings: The great majority of the students consider "informed consent" an important issue with respect to their professional lives; however, they think that their knowledge and skills are insufficient. They are generally satisfied with the UAOAB education (mean 81.3%). The ratio of students, who think that the program is efficient in terms of professional responsibility acquisition and teaching communication skills, is significantly higher between the years of 2012-14 than previous years.Results: Students are in need of acquiring knowledge and skills about "informed consent" and related issues.
