Developing a New SVPWM Control Strategy for Open-Winding Brushless Doubly Fed Reluctance Generators

Abstract: --In this paper, a new open-winding control strategy is proposed for a brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (BDFRG) used for standalone wind turbine or ship generators. The BDFRG is characterized with two windings on the stator: a power winding and a control winding. The control winding is fed with dual two-level three-phase converters, and a vector control scheme based on space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is designed. Compared to traditional three-level inverter systems, the dc-link voltage and… Show more

“…To evaluate the performance of proposed DPC strategy, the simulation model is established in MATLAB/Simulink ® as shown in Fig. 2, and the BDFRG parameters as follows: PN = 42 kW, UNp = UNc = 380 V, pp = 3, Rp = 0.1662 Ω, Lp = 0.01737 H, Lpc = 0.01813 H, pc = 1, Rc = 0.1882 Ω, Lc = 0.02351 H, J = 0.3 kg m 2 [12].…”

“…Brushless doubly-fed machines (BDFMs) are the evolution of cascaded induction machine [1], which have been investigated as a probable alternative to the existing solutions in variable speed applications with limited speed ranges during the last decade [1]- [3], [5]- [12], [15], [16]. The main motivation for this increasing interest is due to its advantages of reasonable cost, high reliability of brushless structure and maintenance-free as well as competitive performance [1], [2].…”

“…In this paper, a novel three-level converter topology is applied to the open-winding brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (OW-BDFRG) with hybrid rotor consisting of magnetic barrier reluctance and cage rotor [22]. The control winding is open-circuited and fed by the dual two-level converters (D-TLCs) [23], [24] as shown in Fig. 1.…”

“…The BDFG can not only offer further cost cuts by the high reliability and maintenance-free operation of brushless construction [3], but the superior LVRT characteristics without a crowbar too due to the proportionally larger impedances, and hence reduced fault currents, than the equivalent DFIG [6], [9], [10]. Apart from the target WECS, stand-alone wind [11] and/or ship shaft power generation applications [12] are feasible.…”
