Abstract: The dustiness of 12 test powders was determined using three different measuring methods. One of the methods, the continuous drop method, is a reference test method according to the EN 15051 'Workplace atmospheres--Measurement of the dustiness of bulk materials--Requirements and reference test methods'. A test of equivalence between the reference test method and the other two methods, the modified Heubach Dustmeter, a rotating drum method and the Palas Dustview, a single-drop method, has been carried out as pro… Show more

“…Furthermore, it should only require the use of small amounts of material so that even expensive, novel materials can be tested. Different aerosolization methods exist, such as the continuous drop method (Bach & Schmidt, 2008), the rotating drum method (Breum, 1999;Schneider & Jensen, 2008), the vortex shaker method (Morgeneyer, Le Bihan, Ustache, & Aguerre-Chariol, 2013), the magnetic stirrer setup (Stahlmecke et al, 2009) and the stirred fluidization system (Saleh et al, 2014). These systems can produce different particle number concentrations by controlling such experimental parameters as the feed rate, rotation speed, or shaking frequency.…”

“…However, Bach and Schmidt used a commercial version of this apparatus, the Palas Dustview (Palas GmbH, Karlsruhe, Germany), and chose the concentrations at 0.5 s and 30 s as representative of the inhalable and respirable fraction of dust, respectively. (18) The device, therefore, provides a dustiness “characteristic” of the test powder since the concentration value obtained is not related to the mass of powder applied to the device.…”

“…The Wuppertal paper is presented in two parts. In Part 1, the dustiness of nine industrial powders was measured with the Venturi device, and results compared with their earlier measurements (Bach and Schmidt, 2008) using macroscopic techniques: EN 1505 standardized continuous drop (CEN 2006, 2013) and the commercial Heubach rotating drum and commercial Palas single drop. In Part 2, dustiness values for 11 pharmaceutical powders were determined solely with the Venturi device.…”

“…Unfortunately, insufficient detail is provided on the provenance of the Wuppertal powders (Bach and Schmidt, 2008; Bach et al , 2013), to allow an inter-laboratory comparison with identical materials. (By contrast, our measurements (Evans et al , 2013) for Holland lactose of D tot = 5.2 (0.4)% and D resp = 0.9 (0.1)% are fully consistent with those of the UNC group (Boundy et al , 2006), with D tot = 5.1 (0.9)% and D resp = 1.3 (0.5)% for the same material.)…”
