Determining the Antibacterial Activity of Chlorhexidine Mouthwashes with and without Alcohol against Common Oral Pathogens

Abstract: Aims and Objectives: Mouthwashes with antibacterial activity inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth and teeth. Chlorhexidine is one of the most widely used mouthwashes that inhibits dental plaque and prevents tooth surface decay. Recently, concerns have been raised that alcohol-containing mouthwashes may have carcinogenic properties and may be harmful to children and pregnant and lactating women. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial effects of chlorhexidine mouthwashes with and without… Show more

“…The concentration of the microorganisms was adjusted to 5 × 10 5 CFU mL −1 by 0.5 McFarland solution. Then, the plates were incubated at 37°C for 24 h (Bahlouli et al, 2018). After incubation, turbidity was evaluated to determine bacterial growth, and the dilution with no turbidity (lack of growth) was considered as MIC.…”

“…Among these, CHX remains the gold standard for reducing plaque and gingival inflammation [ 22 , 23 ]. However, CHX causes tooth staining, alters taste perception and promotes calculus or tartar [ 17 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. Thus, there is need for new, sustainable, effective, safe, and economic substances that can be formulated into daily treatment products and particularly mouthwashes that are easier to use and able to reach the narrow and small spaces in the mouth that brushing cannot.…”

“…A number of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria have been recorded, which includes more than 500 species endemic the oral cavity. 2 The presence of many of them in the mouth has been classified naturally and is called oral flora. 3 At the same time, some of them are harmful and cause tooth decay and gum disease.…”
