Abstract-An attempt was made to detect a meteoritic component in both crater-fill (fallback) impact breccias and fallout suevites (outside the crater rim) at the Bosumtwi impact structure in Ghana. Thus far, the only clear indication for an extraterrestrial component related to this structure has been the discovery of a meteoritic signature in Ivory Coast tektites, which formed during the Bosumtwi impact event. Earlier work at Bosumtwi indicated unusually high levels of elements that are commonly used for the identification of meteoritic contamination (i.e., siderophile elements, including the platinum group elements [PGE]) in both target rocks and impact breccias from surface exposures around the crater structure, which does not allow unambiguous verification of an extraterrestrial signature. The present work, involving PGE abundance determinations and Os isotope measurements on drill core samples from inside and outside the crater rim, arrives at the same conclusion. Despite the potential of the Os isotope system to detect even small amounts of extraterrestrial contribution, the wide range in PGE concentrations and Os isotope composition observed in the target rocks makes the interpretation of unradiogenic, high-concentration samples as an impact signature ambiguous.

A method is proposed for the determination of Pt, Pd, Ru and Ir in geological samples by isotope dilution-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Mono-isotopic elements Rh and Au are determined by external calibration using Lu as the internal standard. Sodium peroxide fusion in corundum crucibles (instead of glassy carbon or zirconium crucibles) is used to decompose the samples. After dissolution of the fused cake in water, the solution is spiked with enriched stable isotopes of Pt, Pd, Ru and Ir, and then acidified with HCl. This solution is then evaporated to dryness promoting the formation of anhydrous silicate from colloidal material. PGEs and Au are then pre-concentrated by Te co-precipitation.The reagents HCl and SnCl 2 are purified by Te co-precipitation. PGE blank levels are thus only derived from the Na 2 O 2 which has PGE concentrations of <0.02 ng/g. Lutetium is added as the internal standard to correct for instrument drift and matrix suppression effects for the determination of the monoisotopic elements. Method detection limits range from 0.02 to 0.3 ng/g. The results obtained for the CCRMP (CANMET, Ottawa, Canada) certified reference materials WGB-1 (gabbro), TDB-1 (diabase), UMT-1 (ultramafic ore tailings), WPR-1 (altered peridotite), WMG-1 (mineralized gabbro), and WMS-1 (massive sulphide) are in good agreement with certified values.

SummaryThe objective of this report is to compile, in a single reference, several radiochemical analyses performed by the V.G. Khlopin Radium Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia. These analyses were performed for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Four samples of spent nuclear fuel were analyzed for certain rare earths (Neodymium, Samarium, Europium, and Gadolinium) and one sample was analyzed for Rhodium. This work was conducted from 1993 to 1995 for the Department of Energy (DOE) Burnup Credit Program.To maximize the value of the Khlopin reports, no attempt has been made to "clean up" the English, nor has there been any attempt to alter data. The reports were reproduced, basically verbatim. Fuel exposure for each sample was extracted from old program records and added to the report. Two tables containing earlier chemical analyses on each sample were added as an appendix.The individuals who performed the analyses were A.
