Determination of Parameters for the Supercritical Extraction of Antioxidant Compounds from Green Propolis Using Carbon Dioxide and Ethanol as Co-Solvent

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the best processing conditions to extract Brazilian green propolis using a supercritical extraction technology. For this purpose, the influence of different parameters was evaluated such as S/F (solvent mass in relation to solute mass), percentage of co-solvent (1 and 2% ethanol), temperature (40 and 50°C) and pressure (250, 350 and 400 bar) using supercritical carbon dioxide. The Global Yield Isotherms (GYIs) were obtained through the evaluation of the yield, and the che… Show more

“…Ethanol is a widely used solvent for extracting biologically active compounds from propolis [41]. A previous study comparing the extraction methods used for propolis had concluded that ethanol extracts have the maximum anti-bacterial effect, which can be attributed to their highest content of phenolics and flavonoids [42], which validates our findings that Eth extract is more effective than EA extract in terms of anti-bacterial effect.…”

“…The conventional technique uses ethanol as solvent, while alternative methods, such as extraction of supercritical fluids, have also been described. The extraction method directly affects the yield and selectivity of some components (Machado et al, 2015, Machado et al, 2016. Importantly, propolis obtained by aqueous extraction contains amino acids, organic matter and carbohydrates, which are not present in the ethanol extraction.…”

“…The critical temperature is the highest one, at which the gas can be converted in liquid through the increase in pressure. The critical pressure is the highest one, at which the liquid can be converted in gas through the increase in the liquid's temperature (Gomez and Ossa, 2002;Machado et al, 2015;Machado et al, 2016a).…”
