In this study, the adsorption of lignin-modified silica gel after association with six different organophenylmercuric compounds in chloroform was investigated. Adsorption reached approximately 90% of the maximum value within 15 min. The adsorption capacity, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and interaction simulation results indicated that the adsorption proportion resulted from the strong dipole-dipole interaction between the lignin and analyte molecules, and was considered to be size- and structure-dependent. However, the π-π complexation interaction arising from the acidic aromatic moiety of the analyte, which was significant in an apolar environment, was not the major force responsible for the resulting adsorption. Additives, such as acid or ether, which competed with the analyte for the binding site on the lignin molecule, were not beneficial to the interaction, and thus not beneficial to the adsorption processes.

A sensitive determination method for mercury speciation analysis was developed. Four mercury species, mercury ion, methylmercury, ethylmercury, and phenylmercury, were complexed with emetine-dithiocarbamate (emetine-CS2), and then injected onto a HPLC instrument coupled with a tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(III) chemiluminescence detection system. The emetine-CS2 complexing agent was effectively used to measure the concentration in addition to serving as a separation and detection reagent. The calibration curves for these mercury complexes were linear in the range of 0.050 -10 μg L -1 (as Hg). The limit of detection for (emetine-CS2)2Hg, emetine-CS2-methylmercury, emetine-CS2-ethylmercury, and emetine-CS2-phenylmercury were 30, 17, 21, and 22 ng L -1 , respectively. The sensitivity of this method enables the determination of mercury species in water samples at sub-ppb levels. Furthermore, the method was applied to biological samples in combination with acid leaching and liquid-liquid extraction using emetine-CS2 as an extraction reagent. The determination results were in good agreement with the values of the certified reference materials.

Synthesis of blue fluorescent carbon dots and their application in detecting mercury and iodine based on “off–on” mode

In this study, a type of blue‐emission fluorescent carbon dot was synthesized using malic acid, urea, and water. This material demonstrates strong stability to heat, ionic strength, and time. It was found that mercury ions can quench the blue fluorescence of the material, and using iodine ions, the fluorescence can be recovered. Hence, we designed an “off–on” mode to detect mercury and iodine ions using the carbon dots. The results showed that this material exhibits good selectivity and recovery rate. Concurrently, imaging experiments showed that this material demonstrates low cytotoxicity and can be used in cell fluorescence imaging. The study concludes that this material has wider application prospects in the future.
