Detection of trace amounts of insoluble pharmaceuticals in water by extraction and SERS measurements in a microfluidic flow regime

Abstract: Microfluidic extraction and subsequent SERS measurements are proposed for online detection of trace amounts of poorly water-soluble pharmaceuticals in relevant kinds of water-based solutions.

“…The surface of 2D gold grating and optical fiber has been functionalized by spontaneous or electrochemical reduction using lipophilic ADSs with a long aliphatic chain for SERS sensing of cardiovascular disease markers [ 131 ] or water‐insoluble ibuprofen from wastewater. [ 132 ] Other useful groups for attachment are COOH and NH 2 due to their high reactivity with DNA, antibodies, and other bioactive molecules [ 18b–d ] or the possibility to promote the growth of MOFs/COFs. [ 111,133 ] Diazonium modification provides unique opportunities for the postfunctionalization of organic functional groups and the design of materials with high selectivity.…”

“…A recent article by Burtsev et al. established a method for detecting and removing ibuprofen from water samples via microfluidic extraction and then capture by lipophilic functionalized gold multibranched nanoparticles (AuMs) 102 . This method did not require sample pre‐treatment, was reliable and reproducible and had a low LOD (1.2 × 10 –8 M).…”

“…Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is a well-known surface-sensitive technique used for the past four decades [1,2]. Due to its high sensitivity with unique fingerprinting capability, researchers across the globe use this technique in various fields like medical diagnosis [3][4][5][6][7], food safety and environmental monitoring [8][9][10][11], defense and security [12,13], pharmaceuticals [14][15][16], and so forth. In the SERS process, the scattered Raman signal from the test sample gets enhanced in the presence of noble metal nanoparticles.…”
