Purpose of Review Statistical models of shape and appearance have increased their popularity since the 1990s and are today highly prevalent in the field of medical image analysis. In this article, we review the recent literature about how statistical models have been applied in the context of osteoporosis and fracture risk estimation. Recent Findings Recent developments have increased their ability to accurately segment bones, as well as to perform 3D reconstruction and classify bone anatomies, all features of high interest in the field of osteoporosis and fragility fractures diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. An increasing number of studies used statistical models to estimate fracture risk in retrospective case-control cohorts, which is a promising step towards future clinical application. Summary All the reviewed application areas made considerable steps forward in the past 5–6 years. Heterogeneities in validation hinder a thorough comparison between the different methods and represent one of the future challenges to be addressed to reach clinical implementation.

Osteoporotic fractures are associated with an increased risk of subsequent fractures, a higher rate of mortality, and incremental medical costs. Incidental findings, which include some measurements related to the mandibular inferior cortex and the alveolar trabecular bone pattern of the mandible determined on panoramic radiographs, are considered to be a useful tool for identifying asymptomatic individuals at risk of having osteoporosis and/or fragility fractures. We undertook a worldwide literature survey and present the following clinical recommendations. Postmenopausal female dental patients with a mandibular inferior cortical width of less than 3 mm on panoramic radiographs may be at risk of having low skeletal bone mineral density (BMD) or osteoporosis, but not fragility fractures. In addition, those with a severely eroded mandibular inferior cortex may have an increased risk of having low skeletal BMD, osteoporosis, and fragility fractures. The alveolar trabecular bone pattern of the mandible might be useful for identifying female dental patients at risk of having fragility fractures, although further investigation is necessary to confirm this possibility. These incidental findings on panoramic radiographs, when used for identifying asymptomatic postmenopausal female patients at risk of having osteoporosis in general dental practice, may be helpful in reducing the incidence of first fractures, with a consequent reduction in the secondary fractures, medical costs, and mortality associated with osteoporotic fragility fractures, without incurring any additional cost.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used in many areas of computer vision, such as object tracking and recognition, security, military, and biomedical image analysis. This review presents the application of convolutional neural networks in one of the fields of dentistry -orthodontics. Advances in medical imaging technologies and methods allow CNNs to be used in orthodontics to shorten the planning time of orthodontic treatment, including an automatic search of landmarks on cephalometric X-ray images, tooth segmentation on Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images or digital models, and classification of defects on X-Ray panoramic images. In this work, we describe the current methods, the architectures of deep convolutional neural networks used, and their implementations, together with a comparison of the results achieved by them. The promising results and visualizations of the described studies show that the use of methods based on convolutional neural networks allows for the improvement of computer-based orthodontic treatment planning, both by reducing the examination time and, in many cases, by performing the analysis much more accurately than a manual orthodontist does. This note has no numbers. In this work we demonstrate the formation Y_1 of a new type of polariton on the interface between a cuprous oxide slab and a polystyrene micro-sphere placed on the slab.
