Desulfurization and Demineralization of Asphaltite Using Combination of Froth Flotation and Aqueous Caustic Leaching

Abstract: The mineral matter and sulfur, which are present in varying amounts in asphaltites, are a major problem in utilization of asphaltites as a fuel. The effect of leaching asphaltites from Sırnak and Silopi, SE Anatolia, Turkey, with froth flotation following aqueous sodium hydroxide on desulfurization and deashing was investigated. Froth flotation reduced the ash content of asphaltite by 35.8 % and 35.3 %, pyritic sulfur 22.55 % and 8.7 % (wt %) and its volatile matter content by 28.9 % and 28.9 %. The asphaltite… Show more

“…Research on desulphurization of pre-combustion coal has been carried out by many researchers (Ambedkar et al, 2011;Park and Kim, 2006;Tian et al, 2016;Wang et al, 2017). Some of the literature survey in which sulphur is removed by chemical treatment (Abdollahy et al, 2006;Longjun et al, 2012;Singh et al, 2013), bio-desulphurization (Cara et al, 2005;Gonsalvesh et al, 2013), oil agglomeration (Sahinoglu and Uslu, 2015), flotation (Abdollahy et al, 2006;Saydut et al, 2008) and ultrasonic treatment (Saikia et al, 2014a(Saikia et al, , 2014c. All processes include inherent advantages and disadvantages.…”

“…Different veins of asphaltic materials have different physical and chemical characteristics depending on the location of asphaltic material, geological formation and degree of metamorphosis. Seguruk vein (5.7·x 10 5 T) is one of the important asphaltite deposits in Turkey (Saydut et al, 2008b). Owing to the investigation of coal or petroleum-origin bitumen and pyrobitumen containing formations in the world as an alternative for the production of liquid/gas fuel and chemical raw material, the subject has attracted lots of interest in Turkey and the studies concerning the determination and characterisation of asphaltites have increased (Kavak, 2011).…”
