“…1). Though pseudoreplication is still being debated in ecological and animal behavior studies (Hurlbert 1984;McGregor et al 1992;Searcy et al 1997;McGregor 2000;Kroodsma et al 2001;Oksanen 2001;Hurlbert 2004;Oksanen 2004;Freeberg and Lucas 2009;Schank and Koehnle 2009), we controlled for the possible effects of pseudoreplication on our conclusions in the present study. Both the HSA and LSA calls used in the present study contained five notes recorded from the same individual with both temporal and frequency parameters close to average values for the population.…”

“…The debate over video playbacks also resembles the controversy, in the late 1980s, over the issue of pseudoreplication in acoustic playback studies, in that it has begun to polarize practitioners and critics of the approach. A workshop among the protagonists of the acoustic-playback debate resulted in a consensus paper (McGregor et al 1992) that addressed many of the key points of contention. This helped to defuse some of the more acrimonious disputes in the acoustic-playback field.…”

“…In preliminary experiments we observed that the budgerigars displayed identical qualitative responses to hearing 2 alarm calls produced by 2 different individuals, which minimizes problems of pseudo replication (McGregor et al 1992). To take in account a possible signal effect, an experimental control sound (CS) was constructed by synthesis using Syntana software (Aubin 1994).…”
