Over the past few decades, geoportals have been considered as the key technological solutions for easy access to Earth observation (EO) products, and the implementation of spatial data infrastructure (SDI). However, less attention has been paid to developing an efficient model for crowdsourcing EO products through geoportals. To this end, a new model called the “Open Community-Based Crowdsourcing Geoportal for Earth Observation Products” (OCCGEOP) was proposed in this study. The model was developed based on the concepts of volunteered geographic information (VGI) and community-based geoportals using the latest open technological solutions. The key contribution lies in the conceptualization of the frameworks for automated publishing of standard map services such as the Web Map Service (WMS) and the Web Coverage Service (WCS) from heterogeneous EO products prepared by volunteers as well as the communication portion to request voluntary publication of the map services and giving feedback for quality assessment and assurance. To evaluate the feasibility and performance of the proposed model, a prototype implementation was carried out by conducting a pilot study in Iran. The results showed that the OCCGEOP is compatible with the priorities of the new generations of geoportals, having some unique features and promising performance.

Most of the organization uses information system to manage the information and provide better decision making in order to deliver high quality services. Due to that the information system must be reliable and fulfill the quality aspect in order to accommodate organization's need. However, some of the information system still facing problems such as slow response time, problem with accessibility and compatibility issues between hardware and software. These problems will affect the acceptance and usage of the information system especially for non-computing users. Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate the factors that significantly contribute to the quality of software for information system. A survey was carried out by distributing a set of questionnaires to 174 respondents who are involved in development of software for information system. The data was analyzed using Rasch Measurement Model since it provides reliability of respondents and instruments. The result indicates that 30 factors had significantly contributed to the quality of software for information system and of these, six factors are under functionality, five for reliability, ten for usability, five for efficiency, two for compatibility and two for security. It is hoped that by identifying these factors, system developers can seriously consider of enhancing the quality of software for information system projects. In future, these factors can be used to develop an evaluation tool or metrix for quality aspects of software for information system projects.

In this virtual thematic issue (VTI) the authors of 14 papers address key challenges of environmental modelling and software to support the identification of human and ecological health risks. The contributions address different pathways how environmental exposure can affect human health with a focus on models, data and software and can be divided into the following research areas: (1) modelling approaches to quantify air pollution concentrations and exposure, (2) models and methods to determine health effects of air pollution, (3) models and software to predict and quantify disease and health risks and (4) data interoperability and integration. These contributions highlight that further advances in this research field are required, especially from highly polluted regions, as so far papers from these regions are scarce. The majority of contributions covers exposure to ambient air pollution, which is a key public health risk in both industrialised and developing countries. While not a focus of this VTI, human exposure to water and soil contamination as well as exposure pathways through other environmental media are equally relevant. Further research into how modelling, software and data can support an integrated assessment of the whole Exposome is therefore essential.
