Design and Modelling Methodologies of an Efficient and Lightweight Carbon-fiber Reinforced Epoxy Monocoque Chassis, Suitable for an Electric Car

Abstract: The design of an electric urban car's chassis for the "Shell Eco Marathon" competition takes into account the usage and the type of the vehicle. The most critical factors of designing the new chassis are: the reduction of the weight, improvement of strength and stiffness and reduction of material and manufacturing cost. Towards this direction, a new design approach for a lightweight carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy (CFRE) monocoque chassis, is proposed, which conforms to structural, ergonomic and aesthetic requir… Show more

“…The worst case stress scenario which is used in the current work has been thoroughly described in our previous paper [8]. In this scenario, the vehicle is turning in the first corner and the wheel is positioned in the apex at 30 km/h, it encounters a stationary preceding vehicle and decelerates immediately (6 m/s 2 ), to avoid the accident [22][23][24][25][26][27][28].…”

“…The chassis load calculator (CLC) model has been presented analytically in our previous paper [8] and it is used in the current work in order to calculate automatically the magnitude and the direction of the loads acting on the car, by importing its characteristics. The model has been implemented by the use of vehicle dynamics theory [22,[29][30][31][32][33] and the model's output is presented in Tables 5-7.…”

“…The main goal is the design and production of a lightweight structure suitable for the fuel cell powered car, in a low production cost. The current work has been revealed through the development of previous works [2,3]. It is worth noting that the chassis is particular designed for the needs of the Shell Eco Marathon racing competition [4].…”

“…The fuel cell uses a hydrogen 200 bar bottle as a fuel tank. The achieved autonomy is around 70 km/kwh and the CO 2 emissions are 0 g. These specifications are adopted by [2,3,7].…”
