Presently, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays are two dominant flat panel display technologies. Recently, inorganic mini-LEDs (mLEDs) and micro-LEDs (μLEDs) have emerged by significantly enhancing the dynamic range of LCDs or as sunlight readable emissive displays. "mLED, OLED, or μLED: who wins?" is a heated debatable question. In this review, we conduct a comprehensive analysis on the material properties, device structures, and performance of mLED/μLED/OLED emissive displays and mLED backlit LCDs. We evaluate the power consumption and ambient contrast ratio of each display in depth and systematically compare the motion picture response time, dynamic range, and adaptability to flexible/transparent displays. The pros and cons of mLED, OLED, and μLED displays are analysed, and their future perspectives are discussed.

There is a significantly increasing demand on developing a microLED (μLED) based microdisplay which may be the only display system that can meet the requirements for augmented reality/virtual reality systems, helmet mounted displays, and head‐up displays. However, a number of fundamental challenges which cannot be met by any existing technologies need to be overcome before such a microdisplay with satisfied performance becomes possible. In this paper, a different type of integration concept using an epitaxial approach is proposed, aiming to monolithically integrate μLEDs and high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) on a single chip. This concept can be potentially realized by using a selective epitaxial overgrowth method on a predefined HEMT template featuring microhole masks. Finally, the proposed epitaxial integration concept is translated into a prototype, demonstrating an 8 × 8 microLED microdisplay, where each μLED is electrically driven by an individual HEMT which surrounds its respective μLED via the gate bias of the HEMT.

Machine Learning Based Luminance Analysis of a µLED Array

In the past years, the development of µLED arrays gained momentum since they combine the advantages of LEDs, such as high brightness and longevity, with the high resolution of a micro-scaled structure. For their development, spatially resolved measurement of luminance and color of single µLEDs and the entire light-emitting surface are usually analyzed as they quantify the visual perception. However, studying individual µLEDs is time-consuming to measure and evaluate, while examining the entire light-emitting area suffers from interference from non-functioning µLEDs. This paper presents a method to perform both analyzes with a single measurement employing unsupervised machine learning. The results suggest that a precise reconstruction of the µLEDs and a more accurate characterization µLED arrays is achieved.
