Descriptive analysis of the ‘relictual’ Mediterranean landscape in the Guadalquivir River valley (southern Spain): a baseline for scientific research and the development of conservation action plans

Abstract: Landscape fragmentation is ancient and severe in the countryside of the Guadalquivir river valley (Western Andalusia, Southern Spain). BIANDOCC is a project that aims to inventory all the forest patches embedded in this anthropogenic area to record quantitative, qualitative, and descriptive information about management, conservation status, vegetation physiognomy and Xoristic richness. We have characterized a 'relictual' landscape (t1% of habitat retention) where nearly 70% of the patches (N = 535) are owned b… Show more

“…Arum hygrophilum) they show relatively low endemic species richness. It is relevant that these valleys have long been devoted to intensive agriculture (Aparicio, 2007) and have suffered most deeply the effect of human disturbances since the Neolithic (Ru ız-Mata, 2002).…”

“…Across the Guadalquivir River Valley, 535 forest patches were located and inventoried (26), totalling a surface area of 22,931.5 hectares. The patch area oscillated between 0.19 and 1,737 hectares; but mean (± SD) and median values of the frequency distribution were 42.86 ± 102 and 12.3 hectares, respectively.…”

“…M. communis is an animal-pollinated species belonging to a pre-mediterranean lineage (Herrera 1992), and in this study, we can report a low frequency of outcrossing even under the highest conspecific abundance. The Mediterranean basin, as a whole, and the Guadalquivir River Valley, in particular, can be considered an example of historical climate change and intensive human management (Grove and Rackham 2001;Aparicio 2008). Here, myrtle persists in small populations within forest patches embedded in a highly agricultural matrix (Albaladejo et al 2008).…”
