Background Penicilliosis marneffei is a rare disease caused by Talaromyces marneffei, which is endemic in Southeast Asian countries, and usually occurs in immunocompromised or immunodeficient hosts. We report an unusual misdiagnosed case of penicilliosis marneffei in an immunocompetent patient from a non-endemic area of China. Case presentation: A 59-year-old man presented to hospital with a cough and progressive hemoptysis for a 3-month period. Clinical characteristics, radiological abnormalities, and prognosis were analyzed. Detailed examinations, chest computed tomography, and bronchoscopy were performed. The patient was misdiagnosed as having lung cancer and provided anti-tumor treatment for 1 month in the early stage. Imaging and bronchoscopy showed a neoplasm in the basal segment in the left lung, but a tissue biopsy did not establish a diagnosis. He subsequently underwent lobectomy for the lesion. The final pathological diagnosis was penicilliosis marneffei based on immunohistochemical staining. He was then prescribed specific anti-fungal treatment of voriconazole 200 mg twice daily for 12 weeks. Conclusion Timely fungal culture and pathological examination of clinical specimens are critical for the diagnosis of penicilliosis marneffei, especially in non-endemic regions and immunocompetent patients.

Despite controlled relative humidity in archives and private collections, fungi are a widespread cause of biodeterioration of cinematographic films and historic photographs, which represent a significant cultural and historic loss to society. Photographic emulsions and coatings are organic and hygroscopic in nature and represent a good and easily accessible source of nutrients. Because archives hold whole stacks of these materials, they subsequently contain more fungi in comparison to other enclosed spaces. This in turn generates a need for a systematic microbiological evaluation of fungi isolated from photographic documents in order to pinpoint the potentially biodeteriorative fungal species and increase awareness and control readiness when these species are encountered.With this aim, we have decided to collect data regarding fungal isolates and their biological potency from the following originating materials: gelatin cellulose triacetate or cellulose nitrate films, albumen or gelatin paper photographs, cellulose nitrate negative films, gelatin glass plate negatives and positive paper prints. In addition, the most efficient biotic degraders of gelatin binder are presented and the degradation of cellulose based supports as well as the occurring microbial interactions and the impact of inhibitory silver salts are reviewed. Lastly, based on the origins of fungal contamination and the occurrence of fungi related to allergenic and toxicogenic diseases, prevention and control measures are suggested.

Over the last three decades, the use of dermoscopy has been extended to inflammatory and infectious dermatoses. Regarding the latter, while the first applications concerned skin parasitoses, there has been a significant increase in the publication trend regarding nonparasitic dermatoses over recent years, yet data on this topic are sparse and often lack a standardized analytical approach. This systematic literature review summarizes published data on dermoscopy of bacterial, viral, and fungal dermatoses (dermoscopic findings, used setting, pathological correlation, and level of evidence of studies) and provides a homogeneous terminology of reported dermoscopic features according to a standardized methodology. A total of 152 papers addressing 43 different dermatoses and describing 184 different dermoscopic findings were included in the analysis. The majority of them displayed a level of evidence of V (107 single case reports and 40 case series), with only 5 studies showing a level of evidence of IV (case–control studies). Moreover, our analysis also underlined a high variability in the terminology used in published articles (even for the same dermatosis). Therefore, despite significant potential, future studies designed according to a systematic and standardized approach are required for a better characterization of dermoscopy of nonparasitic skin infections.
