Dermal melanocyte hamartoma. A distinctive new form of dermal melanocytosis

Abstract: An 18-month-old infant had diffuse, gray-blue pigmentation on the buttocks bilaterally, extending the entire length of his right leg in a dermatomal pattern. In the lesion there were several conspicuous macules of considerably darker hue. Histologic and ultrastructural examinations revealed numerous dermal melanocytes. Clinically and pathologically, the patient had a distinctive type of dermal melanocytosis for which we propose the name "dermal melanocyte hamartoma."

“…Dermal melanocyte hamartoma is a rare dermal melanocytosis pattern that does not fit into the typical classification of dermal melanocytosis 2,5 . In the present case, the pigmented lesion distribution differed from the nevus of Ota, nevus of Ito, and Mongolian spots.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

These atypical DMs have been reported by different terms such as 'congenital unilateral dermal melanocytosis, 54 ' 'atypical dermal melanocytosis, 70 ' 'bilateral dermal melanocytosis with a dermatomal pattern, 80 ' 'congenital segmental dermal melanocytosis 81 ' and 'dermal melanocyte hamartoma 85 ' based on distribution pattern. Interestingly, our patient ( Fig.…”

“…In 1950, Dr. Douglas Perry argued that “Mongolian spot” should be called “congenital blue spot” because it was not limited to East Asians . In 1981, the term “dermal melanocytosis” was used to describe skin lesions formed by melanocytes in the dermis, and in 1988, Hori and Takayama included Mongolian spots as a congenital dermal melanosis . While the authors still used “Mongolian spots” as the medical term for these lesions, they paved the way for a more scientific and descriptive term for this birthmark.…”
