Depression in Parents of Children Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Claims-Based Analysis

Abstract: Previous studies showing that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children can have secondary effects on the child's parents are limited by small sample sizes and parent self-report. We examined the odds of depression in parents of children with ASD compared to parents of children without ASD using a large national claims database. Mothers (OR 2.95, 95% CI 2.81-3.09) and fathers (OR 2.41, 95% CI 2.25-2.58) of children with ASD were more likely to have a diagnosis of depression than parents of children without AS… Show more

“…To our knowledge, this is the first direct study of mothers of children with ASD in Bangladesh that report prevalence figure for clinically assessed MDD by means of SCID-I structured interviews following screening of depressive symptoms with PHQ-9 assessments. The estimate of maternal depression in our study is much higher than the results reported in studies conducted in high income countries [Cohrs & Leslie, 2017;Olsson & Hwang, 2001], while consistent with studies conducted in other countries in Asia [Azeem et al, 2013;Firat, Diler, Avci, & Seydaoglu, 2002;Jose, Gupta, Gulati, & Sapra, 2017]. Almost half the mothers caring for a child with ASD at home in urban setting of Dhaka city experienced MDD, which in turn was significantly related with their characteristics of being a mother who did not work outside of the home, receiving no concurrent support for their child's care at home, suffering from a physical ailment, being a target of the neighbor's negative attitudes toward their child with ASD, and having low satisfaction with the health providers on seeking care for their child with ASD.…”

“…In contrast to an earlier study on parents of children with ASD [15], but in line with study on parents of children with anxiety disorders [18], we did not find an effect of the age of the child on parental psychopathology. It could be that the age effect is confined to parents of children with ASD as parents may become more aware of the continuing disabilities, or the problems may become more debilitating on school and social functioning when their child becomes older, and may hinder them to become independent adults.…”

“…For example, a large national-claim database study in the United States found the incidence of depression in parents of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder to increase with age of the child [15], whereas the age of children with anxiety disorders was not found to influence parental internalizing and externalizing problem scores [18]. …”
