The article examines the contradiction between the transformation of information technology into an integral part of contemporary educational activities and the threat of reducing the quality of the educational process and dehumanizing the individual, resulting from the implementation of digital educational technologies. The need for distance work and remote communication is particularly evident in the situation of the pandemic, which requires, on the one hand, restricting direct interpersonal contacts to prevent the spread of infection, and on the other hand – continuing labor activity to prevent an economic downturn. The disadvantages of the distance framework in the educational process concern a decrease in discipline among students, a deterioration in the quality of learning of educational material, economic inaccessibility for low-income families, insufficient coverage of territories with cellular communication, as well as housing conditions that do not allow organizing remote work and training. These shortcomings become a threat to increasing social stratification due to the impossibility of general access to even basic education. The essence of the protests against distance learning shows that the problems are seen not only in the lack of organization of the learning process but also in the very fact of abandoning the traditional learning model. One of the factors of such a threat is the absolutization of the role of information technology in the learning process, which leads to a deterioration in the level of education. To resolve this contradiction, the authors propose to consider the role of humanitarian knowledge as a meaningful aspect of the educational process.

Aim/Purpose: The research aims to uncover the key research themes and trends of Social Media-Enhanced Blended Learning (SMBL) research. It will extract valuable insights from scholarly publications using bibliometric analysis. Background: Although previous scholarly works and bibliometric review papers have examined integrating social media into blended learning and its impact on teaching and learning, none of the studies has explored their convergence. Methodology: The bibliometric review utilized a dataset of 422 scholarly papers extracted from the Scopus research database, shedding light on the performance, and evolving conceptual structure of the SMBL field. Contribution: This study offers valuable insights into the structure and dynamics of the SMBL field, guiding future researchers and practitioners on decisions about social media technology integration in blended learning. Findings: The extant literature on SMBL demonstrates a growing interest in harnessing the potential of social media technologies to enhance the blended learning approach. Notably, “social media,” “blended learning,” “flipped classroom,” “tertiary education,” “e-learning,” “online learning,” and “pandemic” emerged as the top keywords, emphasizing the central focus on leveraging social media platforms to enhance the blended learning experience. Recommendation for Researchers: Research can be extended using multiple research databases and the inclusion of other document types to capture more articles describing the SMBL field. Future Research: Potential future trajectories of the SMBL field can be research studies about developing critical thinking skills and implementing project-based learning methodologies. We also suggest further research on the use and effectiveness of social media integration in blended learning in various educational contexts and social media platforms.

“…La mayoría de las materias universitarias integran aprendizajes complejos, incorporando diferentes objetivos en un solo resultado (van Merriënboer, 2012), como desarrollar el pensamiento crítico o las habilidades cognitivas de orden superior. Como se ha podido comprobar, la DAL favorece el desarrollo de este tipo de aprendizajes (Jeong & Chiu, 2020), incrementa la interacción que se da entre estudiantes (Almatrafi & Johri, 2019), permite crear redes de aprendizaje (Saqr et al, 2020) y estimula la construcción social de conocimientos (Al-Dheleai et al, 2020). Tomando como referencia las recomendaciones europeas y las líneas de acción de los proyectos de innovación de la Universitat de València para la incorporación de un plan digital en los espacios educativos, se incorporó en nuestra práctica docente universitaria la discusión asíncrona en línea. A tal efecto, tratamos de sintetizar evidencias empíricas acerca de los beneficios que puede suponer para la mejora del proceso de enseñanza/aprendizaje universitario y generar materiales para aprender en red, optimizando de este modo la docencia híbrida y a distancia. En este artículo, presentaremos esta experiencia pedagógica aplicada en la Universitat de València, en concreto en la Facultat de Filosofia i Ciències de l´Educació. Llevamos a cabo discusiones asíncronas en línea, configurando foros en Moodle con un formato semiestructurado. Las experiencias educativas duraron entre 10 y 14 semanas y participaron un total de 201 personas, matriculadas en diferentes cursos de las titulaciones de Educación Social y Pedagogía de esta universidad. Se obtuvo que los debates en línea sirvieron para la construcción social de conocimientos y el aprendizaje activo y colaborativo. Finalmente, discutimos las limitaciones de la experiencia y sus implicaciones para la práctica docente.
