Densities, Viscosities, and Surface and Interfacial Tensions of the Ternary Mixture Water + Ethyl Butyrate + Methanol at 303.15 K

Abstract: The excess molar volumes, V E , viscosity deviations, ∆η, and excess surface tensions were calculated from the measured density, viscosity, and surface tension values, σ, over the whole miscibility composition range for the ternary system water + ethyl butyrate + methanol and their constituent binaries, at 303.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The liquid interfacial tension was measured in the liquid-liquid equilibrium range at the same conditions of temperature and pressure. A Redlich-Kister type equation was us… Show more

“…The present work is part of a research program which has been developed in our laboratory to provide density, viscosity, and surface and interfacial tensions for water + ester + alcohol at different temperatures [2][3][4][5]. These systems show liquidliquid immiscibility, with the water + alkanoate system practically immiscible over the complete composition range.…”

“…Liquid-liquid interfacial tension at atmospheric pressure has been reported in the literature for ternary systems whose components include either water, an alcohol or a hydrocarbon [10][11][12][13][14][15], however no data have been found for the multicomponent systems studied in this work. Hence, we have determined experimentally, at 298.15 K, the density of the conjugate phases and the interfacial tension between the liquid equilibrium phases of several tie-lines of multicomponent systems with partial miscibility, formed by isooctane-benzene-methanol, isooctane-benzene-(80 mass% methanol + 20 mass% water), isooctane-benzene-(80 mass% methanol + 20 mass% water) + 5 mass% 2-methyl-1-propanol (isobutyl alcohol or isobutanol), and isooctane-benzene-(80 mass% methanol + 20 mass% water) + 15 mass% 2-methyl-1-propanol.…”

“…Experimental data on density, viscosity, and refractive index of these chemicals were compared with literature values at all investigated temperatures (Table ). The agreement was satisfactory with differences mostly less than 0.8 kg·m –3 for densities, up to 9 × 10 –2 mPa·s for viscosities, and within 6 × 10 –4 almost in all cases for refractive indices.…”
