Dengue viremia in blood donors from Honduras, Brazil, and Australia

Abstract: Dengue viremia rates among asymptomatic blood donors ranged from 0.30 percent in Honduras to 0.04 percent in Brazil. Future studies are needed to establish rates of transfusion transmission by viremic donations and clinical consequences in recipients.

“…There is definite lack of literature regarding seroepidemiology of dengue in healthy population from our country. In a population based seroprevalence study from Pakistan, 67.2% dengue IgG positivity was seen [20]. A few studies have been done across the globe to estimate the burden of dengue infection in blood donors [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28].…”

“…All blood donations in the United States and Canada are screened for WNV with one of two licensed nucleic acid amplification tests (17,22,33). A DENV TMA assay has recently been developed which has analytical sensitivity (approximately 15 copies/ml; 95% limit of detection) comparable to that of the WNV TMA-based assay (18). The use of this unlicensed DENV TMA assay for blood donation screening has established in two research studies the presence of DENV RNA in blood donor samples from Honduras, Brazil (18), and Puerto Rico (20).…”

“…Em recente artigo na Transfusion, Mohammed H et al apontam mais um caso de dengue por transfusão, enfatizando que "a transmissão de dengue por esta via é mais comum do que documentada". 4 Entendemos que para um agente etiológico com essas características é fundamental valorizar esses registros, mesmo publicados sem revisão por pares. A revisão não seria uma ocorrência ainda incerta e não comprovada.…”
