“…SMD was assessed using a supplementary module of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (K‐SADS‐PL; Kaufman et al., 1997; Leibenluft et al., 2003) and defined by persistent abnormal mood (anger or sadness), hyperarousal and increased reactivity to negative emotional stimuli (for full SMD criteria see Leibenluft et al., 2003). SMD precludes the diagnosis of ASD or bipolar disorder.…”

“…In TD children, chronic irritability was studied extensively under the term severe mood dysregulation (SMD), characterized by frequent temper outbursts with irritability between outbursts (Leibenluft, Charney, Towbin, Bhangoo, & Pine, 2003). Childhood SMD predicts depression in adolescence (Brotman et al., 2006), consistent with the well‐established longitudinal association between irritability and internalizing problems (Krieger et al., 2013; Mandy et al., 2014; Stringaris & Goodman, 2009a, 2009b).…”

“…During these episodes, abnormally elevated or expansive mood, and at least three DSM-IV criterion "B" mania symptoms were present. 8 Participants with SMD fulfilled the following criteria: abnormal mood (specifically anger or sadness), present at least half of the day on most days, and of sufficient severity to be noticeable by people in the child's environment (e.g., parents, teachers, peers). In addition, compared with his/her peers, the child exhibits hyperreactivity to negative emotional stimuli (e.g., temper tantrums inappropriate for age or precipitating event) at least three times weekly.…”

“…8 A community-based follow-up study suggests that SMD is common, with a lifetime prevalence of 3.3% in youth 9 to 19 years of age. 9 Furthermore, in that sample SMD predicted depressive disorder at 7-year follow-up in youths who were 9 to 19 years old at baseline.…”
