Deep-sea natural products

Abstract: This review covers the 390 novel marine natural products described to date from deep-water (>50 m) marine fauna, with details on the source organism, its depth and country of origin, along with any reported biological activity of the metabolites. Relevant synthetic studies on the deep-sea natural products have also been included.

“…2В), которое с 2007 г. одобрено в Европе для лечения распространённой саркомы мягких тканей [19]. Полезные организмы могут существовать в экстремальной внешней среде, например, на большой морской глубине [20], в термальных источниках или в солевых озёрах. Примером может быть идентификация галодурацина (haloduracin) -двухкомпонентного лантибиотика (пептидный антибиотик, содержащий лантионин*) из Bacillus halodurans, растущего при экстремальном рН > 9,0 [21].…”

“…The deep ocean is the source of a number of novel natural products isolated from the highly diverse and species-rich deep-sea faunal communities (Skropeta, 2008), in particular from those found at hydrothermal vents (Thornburg et al, 2010;Martins et al 2013). As of 2008, 78 natural products have been isolated from as many as 19 classes and from all Domains of life (Skropeta, 2008). These chemicals show potential for having pharmaceutical properties and applications, including antibiotics (Liu et al, 2013) and anticancer compounds .…”

“…The author would also like to thank Danielle Skropeta for deep-sea natural products data in Fig.1 (Skropeta, 2008, Skropeta andWei, 2014). This paper is based on a presentation by the author to the 14th Deep-Sea Biology Symposium (Aveiro, 01 September 2015), the author gratefully acknowledges funding support from the University of Wollongong Global Challenges Program to attend at this conference.…”

“…The deep-sea is recognised as a significant source of genetic resources. Marine invertebrates, in particular Porifera (Martins et al, 2014, Skropeta, 2008, and microorganisms (Abida et al, 2013, Pettit, 2011, Shimmield, 2013, Sogin et al, 2006 are the largest sources of novel marine natural products described. Viruses are an attractive source of new protein discoveries (Arrieta et al, 2010, Yooseph et al, 2007.…”
