“…Recent studies showed that a bursting state is combined with a decrease in entropy (Cruz et al, 2009;Alam et al, 2012), which is in line with our present finding that a lower maxApEn value is primarily found in cells with a bursty spike pattern compared with regular and irregular firing cells. Accordingly, lesioned rats showed lower entropy and higher burst activity compared to controls.…”

“…Neuronal information transmission is bounded by neuronal firing pattern entropy, and computational studies have suggested that increased entropy in the globus pallidus, upstream from the SNr, induces errors in information transmission through the thalamus (Rubin and Terman, 2004 ; Guo et al, 2008 ; Dorval et al, 2010 ). While some previous work has focused on the covariance of entropy with PD symptoms (Alam et al, 2012 ; Lindemann et al, 2013 ), the reported entropy changes between conditions have been small, especially in the SNr or GPi (Dorval et al, 2008 ; Dorval and Grill, 2014 ). In the present study, entropy changes were not significant, although the general trends in SNr entropy were consistent with the reports cited above.…”

“…The PPN has extensive efferent connections with the STN and also with a number of other structures that modulate the brain's response to conflict, such as the intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus and the striatum (Pahapill and Lozano, 2000). In rats, low-frequency stimulation of the PPN leads to decreased firing in the STN (Alam et al, 2012) and as such, impairments in the effectiveness of this signaling pathway could potentially lead to an increase in the influence of the STN over the basal ganglia. These concepts are supported by the functional improvements experienced by patients with freezing following DBS of the PPN nucleus (Stefani et al, 2007; Strafella et al, 2008; Ferraye et al, 2010; Hamani et al, 2011; Tykocki et al, 2011; Follett and Torres-Russotto, 2012; Khan et al, 2012), along with increases in regional cerebral blood flow observed during stimulation of the PPN (Strafella et al, 2008; Ballanger et al, 2009).…”
