Abstract: One-third of hospital-acquired pressure injuries are related to medical devices. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to create an evidence-based guideline in one acute care hospital setting for the prevention of medical device-related pressure injuries (MDRPIs) and to implement the hospital-wide use of a new nasogastric tube securement device to offload pressure to the nares. The first phase of this project comprised development of a guideline along with multiple education opportunities. The se… Show more

“…The fact that only four of the studies in this review reported urinary catheter-related MDRPI suggests that these may be under-reported. Some studies have investigated risk factors and incidence of MMPI of the mouth or lips [42][43][44][45] and several studies have investigated the use of various dressings or support devices to reduce oral [46][47][48][49] or nasal 50,51 MDRPI or both. 52 The SKINCARE bundle, which includes guidance about management of medical devices and prevention of PI, was shown to be effective in reducing MMPI 28 and MDRPI.…”

“…The relevance attributed to continuing education in relation to the prevalence of MDRPI also stands out. In the United States, after reducing the occurrence of this type of injury with the implementation of a quality improvement project aimed at creating an evidence-based guideline for the prevention of MDRPI and adoption of a new catheter fixation device for feeding, the continuing education of professionals was advocated to sustain the positive results (30) . The use of information technology can be extremely useful.…”

“…16,21 An intervention project on quality improvement and decreased incidence of MDRPI found that the combination of education, development of a preventive intervention package based on evidence of scientific evidence, improved documentation and tracking of these injuries resulted in a reduction in the entire installation of injuries in the 12-month study period. 27 Thus, it is possible to observe that there are several risk factors associated with injuries. Skin inspection, device repositioning and knowledge of the entire multidisciplinary team, since the generation and the triggering factors, are important premises to promote focused and quality care.…”
