Decreased Neurogenesis Increases Spatial Reversal Errors in Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus)

Abstract: Adult hippocampal neurogenesis has been proposed to both aid memory formation and disrupt memory. We examined the role of adult hippocampal neurogenesis in spatial working and reference memory in black‐capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus), a passerine bird that relies on spatial memory for cache retrieval and foraging. We tested spatial working and spatial reference memory in birds that had received methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM), a neurotoxin that decreases hippocampal neurogenesis. MAM treatment signi… Show more

“…This ability seems to be affected by neurogenesis. Increased mistakes are detected in memory reversal test when hippocampal neurogenesis is reduced by methylazoximethanol acetate, supporting the possible relationship between adult hippocampal neurogenesis and separate patterns [111].…”

“…A first explanation could be different costs of different traits. In other species, inhibitory control, problem-solving, and reversal learning are often associated with higher rates of adult neurogenesis (Burghardt et al 2012;Zhang et al 2012;Kalm et al 2013;Swan et al 2014;Audet et al 2018;Guitar and Sherry 2018). If this is also true for lizards, this might explain why these cognitive abilities are more strongly selected against when resources are scarce.…”

“…Moreover, the abolishment of adult hippocampal neurogenesis results in deficits in long-term memory in the Morris water maze and the T-maze [29][30][31], meaning that hippocampal neurogenesis is essential for spatial working memory. Experiments on chickadees show that hippocampal neurogenesis aids in pattern separation and the differentiation of similar memories at the time of encod-ing [32]. Training rats in a Morris water maze supports adult hippocampal neurogenesis, but in a cell stage dependent manner: the enhancement of neurogenesis was detected only when BrdU was injected 6 days before the start of spatial training in the Morris maze [33], i.e., the training had an effect only on neural precursors that were born in a defined time window.…”
