Este sistema pode criar condições favoráveis à multiplicação e a sobrevivência de fitopatógenos necrotróficos em restos culturais, pois muitos dependem dessas condições para sobreviver. Reis et al. (21) demonstraram que as doenças das culturas de lavouras, como as manchas foliares do trigo, são mais severas em plantio direto e monocultura.A rotação de culturas está relacionada com o manejo dos restos culturais e com o período necessário a sua mineralização. Isso por que os restos culturais fornecem abrigo e nutrição aos fitopatógenos durante a fase saprofítica (3,17,21). Todos os fitopatógenos que sobrevivem saprofíticamente nos restos culturais dos hospedeiros [Ex. Grupo Va, McNew (11)] tem suas populações afetadas pelo plantio direto e rotação de culturas.
Conceitos básicos.(i) Controle. É o emprego de medidas que visam impedir ou diminuir a incidência de doenças de plantas de modo a evitar ou reduzir os prejuízos causados. O controle envolve o conjunto de estratégias para minimizar os danos causados pelas doenças (9). Quando se decide controlar uma doença, deve-se ter em mente qual a eficácia de controle esperado (ii) Controle integrado (CI). Segundo a FAO (7) (Organização das Nações Unidas para Agricultura e Alimentação), CI "é um sistema de manejo de organismos nocivos que utiliza todas as técnicas e métodos apropriados da maneira mais compatível possível para manter as populações de organismos nocivos em níveis abaixo daqueles que causem injúria econômica". (15) apresentou o conceito oficial de MID como sendo a "utilização de todas as técnicas disponíveis dentro de um programa unificado de tal modo a manter a população de organismos nocivos abaixo do Limiar de Dano Econômico (LDE) e a minimizar os efeitos colaterais deletérios ao ambiente". O MID satisfaz as exigências técnicas e ecológicas de sustentabilidade da agricultura.
