De Sitter vs Quintessence in String Theory

Abstract: De Sitter solutions have been recently conjectured to be incompatible with quantum gravity. In this paper we critically assess the progress and challenges of different mechanisms to obtain de Sitter vacua in string compactifications and compare them to quintessence models. We argue that, despite recent criticisms, de Sitter models reached a level of concreteness and calculational control which has been improving over time. On the other hand, building string models of quintessence appears to be more challenging… Show more

“…Clearly, the realization of dS minima and of inflation in string theory is a difficult and important subject and such a revived attention is very desirable. An important point in our context is the suggestion of potential counter-examples to the original dS swampland conjecture in [15,24,27,30,32,39]. The refined version of the dS swampland conjecture advertised in [1], which is very close to that of [11], does not have these issues (see [8,9] for earlier suggestions for refinement).…”

“…We would like to emphasize that this was the main idea presented in []. One may either criticize the ten‐dimensional approach from the start (as was done for instance in []) or accept it and argue about the proper implementation within 4 D supergravity.…”

“…More natural models where the scalar couples to all particle species are typically ruled out by fifth‐force searches and solar system tests of gravity . It can also be difficult to realize the low energy scales required using stringy constructions …”

“…[155] It can also be difficult to realize the low energy scales required using stringy constructions. [67] In this paper we propose a stringy alternative to such considerations. The starting point is F-theory on a Spin (7) background; Spin (7) manifolds have recently been studied in a string theory context in [156][157][158][159].…”
