Cytologic Characteristics and β-Catenin Immunocytochemistry on Smear Slide of Cribriform-Morular Variant of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristic cytologic features of the cribriform-morular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (CVPTC) and to find out the possibility of a preoperative diagnosis of CVPTC in fine needle aspiration (FNA). Study Design: A retrospective review of cytologic features of 5 patients who were diagnosed with CVPTC after thyroidectomy and underwent preoperative FNA was performed. In addition, β-catenin immunocytochemistry on a smear slide was applied. Results: … Show more

“…No detail of the cytological feature was given in the report. In 2010, Koo and coworkers from South Korea described the cytological features of five CMV-PTCs as well as reviewing 10 cases from the previous studies (Koo et al 2011). The authors described that cytological features specific for CMV-PTC included cribriform architecture, epithelial morules and columnar cells.…”

“…The authors described that cytological features specific for CMV-PTC included cribriform architecture, epithelial morules and columnar cells. In addition, the β-catenin immunocytochemistry (nuclear and cytoplasmic positivity) could be used to help to diagnose CMV-PTC on cell block (Koo et al 2011). Also in 2010, Hirokawa and coworkers in Japan documented 10 cytological features in 18 CMV-PTCs (Hirokawa et al 2010).…”

“…The classic histomorphology of CMV-PTC has been extensively described in the literature [4,6,7,8,9,10]. The cytomorphology has been described in small reviews [8,9,10,11,12,13,14] and in 3 case reports [11,12,13,15].…”

“…The cytomorphology has been described in small reviews [8,9,10,11,12,13,14] and in 3 case reports [11,12,13,15]. Only one other publication has performed a systematic review in a reasonably sized cohort at a single institution [11,16,17], and this study focused on the diagnosis of CMV-PTC with cytological material alone.…”
