Cytogenetic Effects of Calotropis procera Extract on Vicia faba L.

Abstract: Summary The present investigation study the morphological and cytogenetic effects of Calotropis procera extract on Vicia faba L. The control plants being normal while treated ones are significantly affected. Four concentrations (5, 15, 30, 60%) of this extract were applied for 3 duration time. For treated seeds, low doses caused increase in mitotic indix (MI) and exhibit stimulatory effect on percentage of germination and plant height. On the other hand high concentratiosn gave rise to substantial reduction in… Show more

“…Reduction in MI after ACR could be due to DNA damage and inhibition of DNA synthesis (Nixon et al, 2012), and blocking of cell from entering mitosis (Tülay and Ozlem, 2010). General speaking MI could be disrupted either by inhibitory process of cell division, disturbing normal function of mitotic spindle and producing chromosomal aberration lead to reduction in mitosis (Haroun and Al-Shehin, 2001). Beside increase in number of interphase or dead cells leading to its accumulation, induced DNA damage (Zhang et al, 2009) by ACR could be claimed.…”

“…The elementary analysis of Kochia indica extract was previously carried out by Haroun [8] using ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography and mass spectrophotometery. As shown in Figure 2, the chemical analysis of Kochia indica extract detects an active phenolic compound with proposed molecular formula C 13 H 14 Cl 6 O 4 , molecular weight 447 and chemical structure, 1-phenyl 2,3,4,5,6 hexachloro 2,3,4,5 tetra hydroxy heptane.…”

“…These abnormalities show the direct effect of mutagens on the spindle apparatus and mostly cause somatic instability (Bhat et al 2007). Lagging chromosomes have been a regular feature of many cytotoxicity/ genotoxicity studies with medicinal plant extracts (Ozlem et al 2008, Haroun 2010, Sousa and Viccini 2011. Lagging chromosomes or fragments sometimes could disappear in the cytoplasm and thus be lost, giving rise to chromosome deletion, which is always lethal to humans (Hall and L. Mekki Cytologia 79(2) Garcia 2006).…”
