Cystic Lesions of the Gastrointestinal Tract: Multimodality Imaging with Pathologic Correlations

Abstract: The cystic lesions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract demonstrate the various pathologic findings. Some lesions may present a diagnostic challenge because of non-specific imaging features; however, other lesions are easily diagnosed using characteristic radiologic features and anatomic locations. Cystic masses from the GI tract can be divided into several categories: congenital lesions, neoplastic lesions (cystic neoplasms, cystic degeneration of solid neoplasms), and other miscellaneous lesions. In this picto… Show more

“…The solid portion was relatively obvious (mucosal polypoid hyperplasia) and was often accompanied by fine pointlike cystic changes internally [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]12]. However, this cohort only had one case similar to the reports in the literature, whereas the remaining cases were primarily dominated by the cystic component, with thick mucosal hyperplasia on the surface.…”

“…A definite diagnosis is difficult to establish radiologically, since imaging features are often nonspecific. Cystic gastrointestinal masses can be broadly divided into congenital lesions, neoplastic lesions (including both cystic lesions and cystic degeneration of solid tumors), and other rare lesions such as GCP and Brunner gland hyperplasia (21). Submucosal gastric lesions include heterotopic pancreas (typically along the antrum), duplication cyst (uncommon), GIST, and schwannoma (18,21,22).…”

“…Gastritis cystica polyposa (GCP) is a rare condition, which is histologically characterized by polypoid hyperplasia of the gastric mucosa with cystic dilation of glandular structures (1).…”

“…Chronic mucosal irritation, by bile reflux and increased mucosal mobility in the operated stomach, are thought to play important roles in the pathogenesis of GCP (3). Nevertheless, GCP is rarely found in patients without any prior history of gastric surgery (1,4,5).…”
