Cycled light in the intensive care unit for preterm and low birth weight infants

Abstract

Trials assessing the effect of CL have enrolled 469 infants. Trends for many outcomes favoured cycled light (CL) compared to near darkness (ND) and CL compared to continuous bright light (CBL) The studies may have lacked significance due to a lack of statistical power. Future research should focus on comparing CL to ND.

Timing for the Introduction of Cycled Light for Extremely Preterm Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial

“…As expected, weight gain over time was larger in infants with larger birth weight and caloric intake. Despite weight increasing from PMA week 36–44, our intervention effect sizes were smaller than expected (Morag & Ohlsson, ), and therefore, we were underpowered to evaluate group differences in weight. Our smaller effect sizes are likely attributable to the more immature sample (≤28 weeks at birth) than included in previous studies (Boo et al, ; Brandon et al, ; Mirmiran et al, ).…”
